In 2023, Xerces hired Two Loon Software to rebuild the Bumble Bee Watch website, and I was honored and excited to work on such a meaningful and fascinating project.
Bumble Bee Watch enables individuals, professionals, and volunteers to submit bumblebee sightings for review, identification, and use in a collaborative effort to track and conserve bumblebees across North America.
While we inherited a data model, the application itself was built from the ground up to support submission, review, browsing, and mapping of bumblebee sightings. It’s a complex, custom-built citizen science framework designed specifically for Bumble Bee Watch’s needs.
The mapping features are particularly noteworthy, aggregating and visualizing collected data in real time with minimal processing delay. This allows users to analyze the data in virtually infinite ways.
I care deeply about this project. If you have a few dollars to spare, it’s a cause well worth supporting.
